Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar believes that the government is using the extension of the State of Emergency (SOE) as a means of controlling the population.
She’s also calling for those who are against the extension to honk their car horns and turn on their headlights in protest.
In the United National Congress’ (UNC) Monday Night Virtual Report, Persad Bissessar said that in her opinion there were enough pieces of legislation governing the COVID-19 measures and so she wasn’t sure why a SOE was needed.
“As far as I see it, there are five pieces of legislation – guidelines, rules governing what happens in this pandemic period. You have the Emergency Powers Regulations, you have the Public Health Regulations, you have guidelines, you have what is issued by the Commissioner of Police, you also have statements put out by the Ministry of Health,” she said.
