The government is moving ahead with its efforts to ensure that Tobago obtains autonomy from Trinidad.
This comes as the cabinet has formally requested that President Paula-Mae Weekes proclaims the Tobago House of Assembly Amendment Act on July 26.
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley made the announcement while speaking at the post-cabinet news conference in Tobago, on Thursday.
He said this will require the Elections and Boundaries Commission to prepare a report to be handed over to the Minister of Local Government for 15 seats to be created in Tobago. This must be completed within 90 days of the proclamation.
According to Dr Rowley, once done, the submitted report will be laid in the Parliament for debate and will end with a resolution in the House. It needs a simple majority to pass.
Once gazetted by the President, this will pave the way for the dissolution of the THA and for subsequent elections on the sister isle to finally end the 6-6 deadlock which occurred during the January 25 polls.
