Gabriella Wood has become the first woman from Trinidad and Tobago to qualify in the sport of judo for the Olympics.
The International Judo Federation (IJF) on Tuesday confirmed that Wood had qualified for next month’s Tokyo Games.
Currently ranked 72nd in the +78kg category, Wood secured her place in Tokyo as part of the Pan American quota of 11 competitors.
The Trinidad Tobago athlete is among judokas of 20 countries to compete alongside six refugee athletes.
“This has been a dream and a very long time to make it. I am so happy to be finally going,” Wood said happily on a social media post.
“I just want to give a big thank you to everyone who supported me on the way, including my coach and my training partner, and my other training partner. It’s a very long list of names to mention. Everybody who supported me back home as well. Thank you very much and see you all in Tokyo,” she added.
