Haiti: More than 400 children orphaned by massacres

A human rights organization has reported that 428 children became orphans after their parents were killed in massacres in Bel Air and Cité Soleil between August 2020 and May 2021.

The National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (RNDDH) also counted 125 deaths, 31 missing people and 262 residents went homeless after their homes were set on fire in those massacres.

G9 Family and Allies and Spit Fire, two gangs said to have close ties to the government, orchestrated the massacres because Bel Air and Cité Soleil residents refused to be associated with the G9, according to the RNDDH report released Thursday.

Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, leader of the G9, has denied the accusations and being linked to the government. He said he “reacted” because Bel Air gangs were shooting in neighborhoods that G9 oversees.
