Trade unions are dismayed that they’ve been excluded as an essential service under the latest public health regulations to curb the spread of COVID-19.
A joint statement from representative unions noted that they previously wrote to the Attorney General underscoring the importance for the operations of trade unions to be considered as essential.
The Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM), National Trade Union Centre (NATUC) and the Federation of Independent Trade Union & NGO’s (FITUN) noted that they were listed as an essential service under regulations last year.
The federation argued that not being included as an essential service affects its ability to ensure workers’ rights are protected during this period of uncertainty.
“While understanding the severity of the situation facing the country, Trade Unions represent a significant majority of workers in the essential service industry.
