Jamaica: $300 million in COVID cash grants remain uncollected

Approximately $300 million in cash benefits under the COVID-19 Allocation of Resources for Employees Programme remain uncollected at remittance agency Lasco Moneygram.

Since its inception in April 2020, the programme has successfully disbursed $17 billion to over $500,000 Jamaicans.

The programme sought to provide temporary cash transfers to individuals and businesses to cushion the economic fallout from the COVID-19. It formed part of the Government’s $25-billion stimulus in response to the global health crisis.

The uncollected amount accounts for 2.1 per cent of the $14 billion disbursed that related to applications for the CARE Programme’s core platform that were processed, verified and approved, the programme said in a statement on Thursday.
