Suriname: SRD 100 million for acute relief after flooding

The government has reserved SRD 100 million to absorb the consequences of the flooding. The continuous rain of recent days has flooded many areas nationwide. Some rivers have also burst their banks. Much damage has occurred in various parts of the country, mainly to agricultural crops, but households have also suffered material damage.

A ministerial team headed by the Minister of Public Works, who is also ad-interim for Finance and Planning, Riad Nurmohamed, will address this national problem. While the damage is being repaired, President Chan Santokhi and Vice President Ronnie Brunswick prepare to move to the affected areas.

The Ministry of Regional Development and Sports (ROS) has received reports of affected areas in Commewijne, Wanica, Saramacca and Nickerie. Flooding has also been reported in Marowijne, especially Albina. In the Pamaaka area, the road from Snesikondre to Langatabiki is impassable, making the area inaccessible. In all districts the district commissioners (DC), together with their staff, are busy dealing with the damage. Especially the dirt roads and discharges are being tackled.
