Large parts of Wageningen have been under water for days. The situation got worse last night when the ring dam between the Nickerie River and Wageningen broke through after a split. Pumping stations, supermarkets and houses have been flooded. In some areas the water is knee-high.
The branches of NV Energiebedrijven Suriname (EBS) and the Surinaamsche Waterleiding Maatschappij (SWM) have been flooded. It’s so bad that the EBS has shut down the electricity supply indefinitely. People are now working with all their might to let the water flow away.
In conversation with Suriname Herald, Lidia Kago, district secretary at the administrative service in Wageningen, says that the situation is serious. “The water level in the river is high now. We are now working on our lock gate, because it is also still defective and we are now also working on excavation work for our main canal and storage canal, ”says Kago.
The situation is so bad that people have to place their things on a platform, she further indicates. They have not yet received a request from people who need help because of the situation at the administrative service. She calls on the residents of Wageningen to contact the administrative department if they need help.
