The inhabitants of the Matawa area are currently being evacuated. The villages in Matawai have been flooded by the persistent rains. The situation is alarming in the Matawa region, says Minister Gracia Emanuël of Regional Development and Sport, in conversation with Suriname Herald.
“Only the situation in the Matawa region is worrying. The other areas are not yet of concern and people are in the process of evacuating to higher ground. In certain villages, the villagers can no longer move freely because of the high water level, ”the minister said.
Emanuel further indicates that she is now busy with an inventory of the areas and will then move out to the area.
Due to the persistent rains in recent days, parts of the interior are experiencing enormous flooding. Some villages are flooded, causing great inconvenience to the inland inhabitants.
