Haiti begins to observe three days of mourning for four police officers who were murdered over the weekend, a government official said. The killing prompted #freehaiti to trend across social media.
The police officers were attempting to carry out an operation in Village de Dieu, Port-au-Prince — a “5 Seconds” gang stronghold — when area residents led them into an ambush, according to media reports.
Four of the police officers, Georges Renois Vivender, Désilus Wislet, Eugène Stanley and Ariel Poulard, were killed. Eight others were injured.
The fatal ambush prompted scores of Haitians and Haiti supporters to begin crying #freehaiti to draw attention to the increasingly dangerous conditions under which Haitians are living.
