Supreme Court Judge Joseph Mécène Jean-Louis has been selected to replace President Jovenel Moïse, whose term the opposition believes ended on Sunday.
Moïse insists that his term ends on Feb. 7, 2022.
“The [judicial system] constated that President Jovenel Moïse’s term ended on Feb. 7, 2021, based on the constitution,” said Judge Jean-Louis in a video-message to the nation on Monday.
“I accept the opposition and civil society’s decision to choose me to serve my country as provisional president of the transition. May God watch over Haiti.”
The selection is the latest in the ongoing constitutional crisis over Moïse’s legitimacy as president that has been brewing for months. The Haitian government has yet to answer phone calls seeking comments.
