SOL unleaded petrol price will be increased this weekend. The price at the pump will be adjusted to SRD 12.22 on 6 February at 00.01 am. Sirodjenie Jankie, vice-chairman of the Surinamese Service Station Exploitantenbond (SSEB), confirms this to Suriname Herald. She immediately adds that the increase has to do with the world market price.
Jankie expects the other oil companies to adjust their petrol prices in the coming days as well. The decision to increase this has also already been issued by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation.
Minister Armand Achaibersing of Finance and Planning gave an explanation about the fuel price in January and announced that it will be subsidized. The price at the pump is paid based on the unification rate of SRD 14.29. Because the Central Bank of Suriname (CBvS) cannot provide the oil companies with US dollars, they are allowed to buy it elsewhere. The state then comes in with a currency difference.
