President Chan Santokhi is celebrating his 62nd birthday today. Today, the president is also physically working in his cabinet again, Alven Roosveld, director of the Suriname Communication Service (CDS), told Suriname Herald. Santokhi celebrates his birthday in all sobriety, says Roosveld. He has been cured of the COVID-19 virus.
Santokhi was born on February 3, 1959 in Lelydorp. On his birthday, the president held a thanksgiving service where various spiritual leaders prayed together and for him.
Santokhi was elected a member of the National Assembly (DNA) in 2010. In 2015 he was elected for a second term.
At the age of 19, Santokhi enrolled at the Dutch Police Academy in Apeldoorn. After graduating from the Police Academy, he returned to Suriname in 1982 and joined the Suriname Police Corps.
From 2005 to 2010, Santokhi was Minister of Justice and Police. In July 2010, Santokhi was appointed Grand Officer of the Honorary Order of the Yellow Star by President Ronald Venetiaan.
