The election personnel of Paramaribo-Northeast will be paid from this week. The money intended for the payment was stolen from the safe of the Paramaribo-Northeast police station last week.
Minister Bronto Somohardjo of the Interior (Biza) tells Suriname Herald that consultations have been held with Minister Armand Achaibersing of Finance and Planning about the payment of these employees. It has been decided to pay out from the election account. “The money in the election account is for election purposes, including paying election personnel, and that has been done,” said Somohardjo.
“The SRD 500,000 has been transferred from this Biza account to the account of the supervisory board. Some of the cash had been withdrawn by the supervisory board to pay the colporteurs and others ”, the minister explains.
The investigation into the issue of the stolen SRD 500,000 is still ongoing. “I am convinced that they will catch the perpetrators,” said Somohardjo.
