One man is dead while another wounded after a police officer was attacked last night while walking along the Lady Chancellor Hill in Port of Spain.
The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Franklyn De Freitas of Richplain Road, Diego Martin.
The second suspect, who was shot about the upper torso, is also said to be from the Diego Martin area. He is currently warded under police guard at the Port of Spain General Hospital after he sought medical treatment for his injuries.
The incident happened at about 7.15pm yesterday.
The officer was walking along the hill, which is a popular exercising spot in the capital city, when he walked past a parked car with three occupants. He observed one of the men exit the vehicle holding what appeared to be a gun. The officer heard a gunshot.
In keeping with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s Use of Force policy, the officer drew his licensed firearm and returned fire, hitting the armed suspect.
