After an interruption of almost a year, cash US dollars arrived in Suriname again this week. This confirms Minister Armand Achaibersing of Finance and Planning. The money transport of the Central Bank of Suriname (CBvS) from the United States is part of the government’s currency control plan.
“The restart of money transport is one of the actions in our roadmap towards stabilizing and lowering the exchange rate,” says Achaibersing. In a zoom meeting today, he informed the directors and treasurers of the local banks about the restart of the money transport.
The government is now implementing a series of measures for the health of the Surinamese economy. The structural restoration of calm in the currency market is an important part of this. According to Achaibersing, this first transport immediately removes a lot of air from the course.
At the same time, the minister emphasizes that this does not mean that citizens will be able to immediately withdraw US $ from their account. The withdrawal limits will be gradually increased in consultation with the banks, the Ministry of Finance and Planning writes in a press release.
