Cooperation between the various authorities at the eastern border will be intensified in connection with COVID-19 control. This decision was taken because it has become apparent that the COVID-19 protocols are not complied with when transporting passengers. Representatives from various government agencies discussed the situation at the eastern border at the Ministry of Defense during a coordination meeting.
It is not the intention to stop economic activities. The government’s only intention is to monitor the border in the context of the COVID-19 crisis and to regulate the traffic that necessarily takes place.
During the meeting Minister Krishna Mathoera of Defense pointed out the importance of this coordination meeting. The minister expects closer cooperation between the authorities to achieve better results with regard to the regulation of traffic at the eastern border, crime prevention and COVID-19 control.
Research by the ministry has shown that many people who make the crossing do not go through the immigration service. “We don’t want to be unpleasant to anyone, but the main thing is that we have good COVID-19 control,” said the minister.
