NYC: Newly-named Queens official steps down after tweets critical of Israel resurface

A recently appointed top staffer to Queens Borough President Donovan Richards suddenly withdrew from the position Monday — reportedly after facing scrutiny over old tweets critical of Israeli policies and lobbying efforts.

Michael Hurwitz was named as a deputy borough president on Sunday night and had been set to start in the role next month.

However, on Monday night, Richards said in a statement that “for professional and personal reasons” Hurwitz wouldn’t be moving forward in the post as originally announced.

The statement came hours after some of Hurwitz’s tweets resurfaced earlier on Monday — and were criticized by some members of the borough’s large Orthodox Jewish community, according to the Queens Daily Eagle.
