The large oil discoveries offer Suriname special perspectives for sustainable development. “In the government’s view, the proceeds from natural resources, including oil, will have to go to the Surinamese people, and all preconditions are set for this,” President Chan Santokhi said recently at the government’s end-of-year press conference.
“Provided we are given the opportunity to continue to pursue sound financial and economic policies, society will experience prosperity such as has never been known in our country before. And within the past year the foundations were laid for this ”, the head of state promised.
According to the government leader, the oil discoveries of the past period and the visits of senior foreign officials to Suriname have been good moments for the Santokhi government. He cites the visits of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the official visit of Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali as highlights.
