The freight elevator that fatally crushed a worker at a Manhattan supermarket on Tuesday was illegally installed, according to officials.
“This tragic incident shows just how dangerous unregistered, illegally installed elevator devices can be for New Yorkers,” Andrew Rudansky, a spokesman for the city Department of Buildings, said in a statement Wednesday.
“We have shut down the dumbwaiter, and will be thoroughly investigating this incident.”
Maria Sanchez was loading produce into the dumbwaiter in the basement of the Food Emporium on West 43rd Street near 10th Avenue on Tuesday when the elevator abruptly jerked, crushing her head, according to police sources.
The 39-year-old Bronx woman was found dead in the elevator shaft around 4:10 p.m.
