By 31 votes to 15 against, The National Assembly (DNA) has just approved Attorney General (pg) Roy Baidjnath Panday’s request to indict former Vice President Ashwin Adhin. With this, DNA paves the way for the Public Prosecution Service (OM) to prosecute Adhin.
At the end of November, the Public Prosecution Service had filed a claim against DNA for indicting the former vice president. The Public Prosecution Service has previously indicated that the claim lists criminal offenses, as has become apparent from the criminal investigation. The OM has asked DNA to decide on the prosecution of the ex-vice president.
Adhin had previously been detained. In this case, the examining magistrate (RC) and subsequently the Court of Justice had ruled that the correct procedure had not been followed. The RC and the Court stated that Adhin as a former political office-holder must first be charged.
