President Chan Santokhi has received a top delegation from the United States. The US government is particularly interested in economic relations with Suriname. She has once again confirmed that she sees a partner in Suriname and welcomes the way the new government is doing things.
The US government will shortly make a number of financial facilities available to Suriname, intended for both the Agricultural Credit Fund and small and medium-sized companies. These facilities provide the opportunity to provide loans to small businesses, mainly in the agricultural sector, for further economic development and job creation.
Debt relief was also discussed. For Suriname it is possible to find support from the American authorities for the reorganization program, about which Minister Armand Achaibersing of Finance and Planning has given an explanation in the National Assembly (DNA). This program is important for the route to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The delegation, consisting of representatives from five different agencies, including Development Finance Corporation, first had a brief meeting with Minister Albert Ramdin of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation on Tuesday, after which the delegation made its appearance at the head of state. This group has come to Suriname following the visit of the American Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, last month.
