Suriname is eligible for the US Generalized System of Preferences (GSP). GSP allows countries to export certain goods to the United States free of duty. The program is administered by the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) .
Kamlesh Ganesh, senior policy officer at the Association of Surinamese Businesses (VSB), had a meeting last week with Frankie Sturn, Political / Economic Deputy of the American Embassy in Suriname.
This interview had an exploratory character, in which possibilities were discussed to facilitate entrepreneurs in Suriname and America. It was discussed that the embassy would like to support Surinamese companies, especially exporters. For this it is important that the exporter makes detailed-oriented requests. Detail-oriented requests may include “You want to do business with a specific company / distributor in America”, “You are clear about the product” or “You specify the location of the export”.
USTR has announced through the embassy that it is open to talk to business leaders in Suriname to outline the possibilities of the program. The first meeting will be held with the Minister of Economic Affairs. As soon as that meeting has taken place, a meeting with the VSB board will be organized.
