Suriname: President Santokhi: “No actions against Venezuela from Surinamese territory”

After the meeting with the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, President Chan Santokhi emphasized that the minister’s visit should be placed in the context of strengthening the friendship between the two countries. In response to a question from the Surinamese press, President Santokhi denies that there has been any discussion of whether or not the United States should be allowed to take action against Venezuela from Surinamese territory.

Santokhi said he was aware of the challenges in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The Surinamese government takes the view that the political leaders in that country must solve the problems that the country is struggling with internally. Important principles of the government are democracy, democratic institutions, good governance, the rule of law, human rights and the maintenance of peace and security.
