Suriname: Bus drivers plead with Vice President for legal certainty

The Association of Bus Drivers in formation is calling for more protection for bus drivers. She wants more legal certainty and, above all, wants the health insurance scheme to be arranged for this target group. Today this association in formation had a meeting with Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk.

Immediately after the interview, a petition was handed over to the vice president. The petition was signed by John Cairo, who believes he has a group of 80 bus drivers behind him. According to Cairo, drivers register with the association every day. The association also asks for state recognition of bus drivers. As a group, it also wishes to be regarded as an official discussion partner of the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Tourism, reports the Directorate of Popular Communication.

It also wants to contribute to the organization of the transport sector. The association indicates that the drivers are deprived of income for six months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. She asks the government for financial compensation for the past months.
