Trinidad: Cop and guard on rape, attempted murder charges, ask for bail

THE police officer and security guard charged with the rape and attempted murder of a Venezuelan teen were on Friday denied bail.

The court heard that the 18-year-old was still a patient at hospital.

Before San Fernando magistrate Kerianne Byer virtually, were special reserve police officer Akini Rodriguez, 26 of St James and security guard Aaron Ramkissoon, 20 of Cocorite.

Charges of attempted murder and rape, laid by constable Thompson of the South Western Division, were read to them. They were not called upon to plea to the indictable offences.

Rodriguez who had not been on active duty as an officer for some time, was unrepresented during the hearing. Attorney Herbert Charles appeared on Ramkissson’s behalf.

Police prosecutor Sgt Jesse Jitmansingh said both men had no previous or pending matters before the court. He however objected to them being placed on bail based on the seriousness of the offences and the teen still being in hospital.
