AS inclement weather threatened all day leaving most of the island overcast and looking gloomy, so too was the mood in St. Peter as Barbadians digested the news that they had lost a true son of the soil. After representing the parish for 34 years, there is now a deep hole in St. Peter as former Prime Minister Owen Arthur passed away in the wee hours of yesterday morning.

Taking a trip down to Speightstown, there was an evident gloominess in the air as persons went about their business in a mundane fashion. Many persons in the quiet town declined to speak on the loss, but at the Speightstown Fish Market, The Barbados Advocate was lucky to bump into Merlene Skeete and her brother Anthony Jordan who said that they were related to the late politician.

Skeete was not too keen on speaking on the matter, but did say that it was indeed a sad day. “He was family to me, so I feel sorry that he had to dead and gone long so. This is a big loss, but he gone so there ain’t nothing else to say,” she said.
