Bridgetown merchants are showing little interest in Independence sales as they concentrate more on the lucrative Christmas holiday.
Yesterday, The Barbados Advocate visited several stores along Tudor Street, Swan Street and Broad Street and found that only a small number of stores have displayed any goods for the Independence celebration.
In past years, most stores would decorate their show windows with vibrant blue, gold and black decorations and conspicuously present the national flag in all shapes and sizes.
The Barbados Advocate spoke to the owner of one popular store on Chapel Street which is known for its bright and bold Independence themed memorabilia. The owner who traditionally stocks up on Barbadian branded goods (towels, T-shirts, flags) explained that merchants see more profitability in the Yuletide season. Other clothing stores who are celebrating Independence season placed blue, yellow and black dresses, men’s clothing on the inside and the outside of their store entrances.
