Small reduction in pretrial detention
At the end of the 2017-2018 judicial year, the prison population in Haiti was estimated at 11,700 inmates, of whom 8,725 were awaiting trial, ie 74.57% and 2,975 were sentenced. On September 12, 2019, at the end of the 2018-2019 judicial year, the prison population was estimated at 10,905 inmates, of which 7,893 were awaiting trial, ie 72.37% and 3,012 were sentenced. Pre-trial detention therefore experienced a modest reduction of around 2.19% in one year.
