Dominican Republic: Coalition rejects new reform proposal to enable the President

The Democratic Coalition for National Regeneration movement rejected the new attempt to embark society on another temporary reform of the Constitution, which is intended to enable President Danilo Medina for the year 2024.

The entity said that, when the next one begins legislature, there will be just six weeks left for the primaries of October 6, in which almost all current legislators will be committed and that represent a challenge to democratic institutions and to the Central Electoral Board (JCE).

For this circumstance, a constitutional reform debate, with the aforementioned purposes, would be inappropriate and festive, the entity expresses in a document.

He said that just nine months after the election of a new National Congress, with the primary and two general elections to be held during the same period, it would be a nonsense to undertake a constitutional reform as the 11-point proposal made by the Christian Social Reform Party ( PRSC) and endorsed in part by former President Hipólito Mejía.
