NYC: Half of public school kids in Bronx District 9 fail state math test

More than half of public school kids in the Bronx’s District 9 who took a pivotal state algebra exam last year failed the test — while just 2% notched scores in the top tier, according to state data.

Those figures stand in contrast to a Success Academy charter school in the same district, where all 53 eighth-graders who took the Algebra I Regents exam this year, or 100%, hit the highest level of 5 out of 5.

And local parents say its clear the charter network’s model of rigorous academics is a formula for academic achievement.

“They are not playing around,” said Haja Batchilly, a Bronx mom on a waiting list for a Success Academy kindergarten spot.
