Dominican Republic: Obrador Party consolidates its dominance in state elections

The National Regeneration Movement (Morena), of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is set to consolidate its dominance in Mexican politics, according to the results of the elections carried out this Sunday in six states.

After the polls closed at 6:00 pm local time (23:00 GMT), the leftist group outstripped the other political forces in Puebla, one of the two states in which governor elections were held. According to the unofficial results of the exit polls, Morena’s candidate in Puebla, Miguel Barbosa, obtained around 49% of the votes, ahead of his National Action Party (PAN) rivals, Enrique Cárdenas, with 33%, and of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Alberto Jiménez, with 15%.

Barbosa was narrowly defeated in the elections of July 2018 before Martha Erika Alonso, of the PAN, who died 10 days after her inauguration in a helicopter accident on December 24 together with her husband, senator and former governor Rafael Moreno Valle .
