NYC: Bronx site of vicious Trinitarios gang killing, becomes NYC’s first “safe haven bodega”

The now-notorious Bronx bodega where a teenager was beaten and dragged to his death became the city’s first “safe haven bodega” Wednesday.

The program, launched by shop owners and the NYPD last year, aims to provide enhanced safety measures in stores in the hopes of avoiding the tragic end that befell 15-year-old Lesandro (Junior) Guzman-Feliz last June.

New features at the bodega where Lesandro was killed include a panic button, a magnetic door lock and a new camera system that will allow the NYPD to monitor the store in real time, according to United Bodegas of America spokesman Fernando Mateo.

“This is the first of many, many, many bodegas that will eventually become a safe haven bodega,” Mateo said Wednesday outside the East 183rd Street and Bathgate Avenue storefront.
