A suspect has been arrested in Monday’s fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man in the Orland Park Mall outside Chicago.
Jakharr Williams, 19, of University Park, allegedly shot and killed Javon Britten, 18, of Richton Park, and wounded another person, Orland Park police said Wednesday.
Britton was shot several times in the chest as he hung out with his cousin near the food court, according to the Chicago Tribune. He ran down an escalator and collapsed in front of H&M, Orland Park police said in a statement. Police said they found numerous shell casings at the scene and that a bystander was grazed in the leg.
The shooting sent shoppers and diners scrambling, with many remaining locked down in stores and restaurants for an hour or more. Police evacuated the mall, escorting people out as they searched for the gunman before learning from surveillance video that he had fled the premises on foot.
