The administrative arm of Her Majesty’s Prison Grenada’s main penitentiary, on Wednesday benefited from a special gift from the People’s Republic of China, through the embassy in Grenada.
Five Lenovo desk top computers valued at just over fourteen thousand Eastern Caribbean Dollars were handed over to the prisons, during a special ceremony held at the Chinese Embassy and attended by senior officials from Her Majesty’s Prison’s, staff of the Embassy and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Making the presentation on behalf of the People’s Republic of China was Chinese Ambassador to Grenada His Excellency Dr. Zhao Yongchen.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Selma Bagwan Logie accepted the gift on behalf of the Government and People of Grenada before handing over it to Acting Commissioner of Prison, John Mitchell who was also present at the function.
In making the presentation, Ambassador Zhao said it is their hope that the computers would go towards assisting the prison and the Royal Grenada Police Force in improving their law enforcement capabilities in Grenada. He noted that over the years Grenada and China have enjoyed excellent bilateral relations and therefore it’s just one of the many ways of expressing their appreciation.
In accepting the gift, PS Logie said given the urgency to strengthen the IT departments with the Ministry of National Security including the prison, the computers would go a long way in complimenting that drive. The five computers she said would also assist the prison in strengthening its information integration network.
