A man who murdered a 22-year-old woman in the presence of his four young kids has been sentenced to 20 years in jail.
Alwasi Tyson, 37, fatally stabbed Toni Alea Cox in May 2016 after he found her in bed with his ex-wife inside an apartment on Clarkson Ave. near Bedford Ave. in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn.
The man’s children — then aged 16, 13, 12 and 11 — watched as he hit and kicked Cox, then fatally stabbed her in the chest, according to a criminal complaint.
Over a dozen of Cox’s grief-stricken family members and friends packed a 19th-floor courtroom in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Tuesday for the sentencing, overcome with emotion as a handcuffed Tyson sat with a stoic expression facing the judge.
“I hope that she is the first thing you see when you wake up, and the last thing you see when you go to sleep. I hope that she visits you in your dreams daily, and never lets you forget her,” Cox’s older sister, Ebony, 34, read in her victim impact statement. “I hope that you never get a good night’s rest.”
