A former Rikers Island correction officer could spend the rest of his life on the other side of the bars, after he was sentenced for repeatedly raping a 10-year-old relative Tuesday.
Jose Urena, 48, was sentenced to 15 years to life Tuesday, after a Bronx jury found him guilty of rape, incest an predatory sexual assault against a child last month.
Urena sexually abused the girl for years, starting when she was 10, prosecutors said. The abuse started in June 2013, and continued through 2016.
“Now 15 years old, she bravely testified in court,” said District Attorney Darcel D. Clark. “I hope this sentence will help in this survivor’s healing.”
Urena, who was free on $50,000 bond following his Dec. 2016 arrest, was ordered remanded after his April 16 conviction.
