HANIFF Nazim Baksh, the CEO of AV Oil and Gas, was arrested at his San Francique, Penal home yesterday by police from the Professional Standards Bureau, after several months of investigation.
Baksh, 63, was taken by officers led by ASP Joseph Chandol and Sgt Brian Daniel to the San Fernando Police Station, where he was charged with obstruction of justice. He is due to appear before a San Fernando magistrate today.
Police sources said after Baksh and his son-in law Cpl Billy Ramsundar were detained in connection with an assault on a Guardian photographer, a witness made a report to the Professional Standards Bureau and this led to an investigation. Police got statements from the witness and others and also viewed footage from a surveillance camera.
The matter was referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which on Wednesday gave instructions to lay the charge against Baksh. Yesterday Baksh was allowed to speak with his attorney Michael Rooplal and arrangements made to secure bail.
