This past week was perhaps the most violent since the start of the new year, with four murders and several more injured over a span of five hours on Tuesday night.
The Tuesday night bloodbath started just after 5:20 p.m., on Crocodile Street in San Pedro town. This shooting claimed the life of well-known Belize City Street figure, Paul Jex, who was shot in his head. His companion Dion Neal, a security guard of Caye Caulker village, was also shot but survived.
Jex’s murder is believed to be a result of rising tension among rivals gangs on the island. As a result, additional police have been deployed additional manpower to San Pedro town in an effort to contain the crime situation on the island.
Less than two hours later, a double murder happened on Marage Road in Ladyville village when two gunmen fired multiple shots at a group socializing inside a yard, causing fatal injuries to Casey Lozano, 24, and Marlon Spain, 25. Spain died en-route to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).
